How colour search works

Every wallpaper image on Wallpaper Twins is analysed once and its main colours are stored as measurements in the Lab colour space — the same space paint companies use, where the distance between two colours reflects how different they look to the eye. When you choose a colour we return the wallpapers whose colours sit closest to it, ranked by how prominent that colour is in the pattern. A blue-and-white toile is a strong match for blue and for white; a beige grasscloth with a thin blue stripe is not.

Three ways to choose a colour

Use the wheel or type a code. Drag the wheel, or enter a HEX (#1E3A8A), RGB or CMYK value from a paint swatch, a fabric spec sheet or a designer’s mood board. Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Farrow & Ball all publish RGB values for their paints, so you can match a wallpaper to a paint you already own.

Tap a named colour. The quick chips run the same search with a typical shade of blue, green, beige and so on — a fast way to browse, and each chip also has its own page you can bookmark (linked below).

Match a photo. Upload a photo of your sofa, rug, tile or an existing wall. The photo is read in your browser only — it is never sent to us. We pull out its main colours; click one, or click anywhere on the photo, to search for wallpapers in that colour.

Exact or broader?

The match slider sets how far from your colour we look. “Exact” returns only wallpapers with that shade; “Broader” brings in neighbouring tones — useful when you want a coordinating colour rather than a copy.

Frequently asked questions

Will the wallpaper look exactly like the colour on my screen?

Screens vary, and wallpaper is printed on textured papers and vinyls that reflect light differently. Use colour search to shortlist, then order samples — that is the only reliable way to check a colour in your room’s light.

Can I search by brand?

Yes. The “Search in” menu limits results to one brand’s catalogue, for example York Wallcoverings or Thibaut. Leave it on “All wallpaper” to search everything.

Does it work for murals and architectural film?

It works on every product we have analysed. Murals are included; brands are added as their catalogues are indexed.

Can I send a colour search to someone?

Yes — after a search, use “Copy link”. The link reopens the same colour, brand and match setting.
